Toy Museum

On March 12, 1985, Georges Trincot, an artist from Colmar and collector of antique toys, and Pierre Patoor, set up the Musée Animé du Jouet et des Petits Trains (MAJEPT) association. Their objective was to encourage the exhibiting of toys (trains miniatures, dolls, mechanical toys, etc.), and particularly any items related to locomotion. In 1987, the municipality of Colmar acquired Georges Trincot’s collection. On January 25, 1990, the Municipal Council asked the MAJEPT association to manage and administer the future museum to be opened in December 1993 in what was previously the town’s cinema. Since July 1, 2012, the museum has been managed as a public service delegation from the municipality of Colmar.

BAN ! Les jouets interdits (Forbidden Toys)

From 18 Jan 2025 to 4 Jan 2026

En famille
Exposition temporaire

Free

A miniature steam engine, a highly flammable celluloid doll, or even toy guns... All these objects were once cherished toys of children from the past. Once seen as harmless or even educational, some of these toys today spark controversy or surprise.

Our new exhibition BAN! Forbidden Toys offers a different perspective on these objects we commonly call "toys" – and which would likely be banned from store shelves today. This exhibition highlights items that were banned, or arguably should have been.
Through the lens of changing safety standards, moral values, and societal evolution, these toys invite us to reflect on how our perceptions have shifted – and what that tells us about past societies. Perhaps the toys we now consider harmless will be the subject of tomorrow's debates...
