Théo BEHRA (doctoral candidate in contemporary history at the University of Strasbourg), The secret routes of smuggling in Northern Alsace
Located at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Switzerland, the Upper Rhine region has long been fertile ground for smuggling, due to differences in regulations and taxation between the countries. In Alsace, the smuggling of goods such as salt and tobacco was particularly widespread. In the 19th century, this trafficking took various forms, ranging from small-scale peddling to full-fledged armed gangs. The strategies of the smugglers and the reactions of law enforcement interacted and solidified a phenomenon that was far from marginal.
