The Pays de Hanau Museum is housed in a remarkably renovated architectural complex, listed as a Historic Monument. The 16th century wheat market and the former 14th century castle chapel serve as the setting for this Museum of France, a real tool for interpreting a territory with multiple heritages.
Opening hours
From 1 July to 15 September: Wednesday to Friday, 10am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 6pm. Saturday and Sunday: 2pm to 6pm.
14 July and 15 August:
- if Wednesday, Thursday or Friday: 2pm to 6pm
- if Monday or Tuesday: closed
Museum closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (including public holidays).

The museum is equipped with a lift and is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. There are benches all along the route, allowing you to rest regularly. A car park is reserved for you at 40 m from the main entrance of the Museum.

1h10 from Saarbrücken and 1h30 from Nancy.The Museum is located in the centre of Bouxwiller, near the Town Hall. Parking and restaurants are available near the museum.

For the very first time, an exhibition analyses history, evolution and the stakes behind regional costumes worn in Hanau Country. The Museum of the Country of Hanau presents a large exhibition on the regional costume, thanks to an important construction of the collections on nearly 3,000 textile pieces - between 2022 and 2024 - having studied the rediscovered treasures.
From the pieces of clothing worn on the territory, their formal evolutions and specificities, the exhibition is interested in users and functions behind the variety of fabrics, embroidery and infinity of the techniques used. Can textiles trace life paths? How did the black-knoted hair come about? The reappropriations, artistic, historical or even folkloric, will also allow us to grasp the richness, longevity and inspiration of this local textile history.
Nearly 300 works are presented in the temporary exhibition space, with a large majority rotating mid-term. This is the occasion to admire new pieces coming to renew the speech, offering almost a second exhibition.

Workshop « Build your plastron! »

FreeLet your creativity flow alongside the volunteers of the Group Folklorique du Pays de Hanau de Bouxwiller. Children will be invited to make their own plastron, an iconic piece of regional costume. Inspired by its rich scenery, they can reinterpret and customize it according to their desires.

Workshop "A costume for Männele and Madile"

Manon Zinck offers a playful workshop around the Alsatian costume to dress a Männele (little boy) or a Madele (little girl). After a bilingual (French/Alsatian) presentation of the different parts of the traditional costumes, the speaker invited the children to dress their characters with clothes cut from foam paper. The participants will leave with their creation, annotated with the name of the clothes in Alsatian.
